Bearkat Power on Full Display: Giving Day Surpasses All Expectations

The second annual Sam Houston State University Giving Day fundraising initiative has met and exceeded expectations once again, raising $306,478 from approximately 1,026 donors, with gifts continuing to come in. 

$500,000 Grant Expands Rural Residency Program in Huntsville, Strengthening Access to Primary Care

SHSU-COM, in partnership with the Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium and Huntsville Memorial Hospital , has received a $500,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board through the Rural Resident Physician Program. This funding will support the expansion of the HMH Family Medicine Residency Program, bringing more healthcare providers to the area and increasing access to primary care in Walker County and surrounding rural communities.

Graduate Students Present at Sigma Tau Delta Convention

Three graduate students involved in the Sam Houston State University chapter of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society recently presented their creative works at the group’s annual meeting in late March. Bleah Patterson, Brittany Bustos and Brianna Chapman flew together to the convention in Pittsburg to showcase the creative excellence of the students in SHSU’s Department of English.   

Bearkat Orgs: Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society

Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) is a national honor society that focuses on first-year students’ success. The organization has chapters at over 400 campuses, including Sam Houston State University, where over 50% of students and many faculty and staff identify as first-generation college students.

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is hosted by the SHSU Honors College Student Ambassadors, who created the annual event to demonstrate the importance of sharing undergraduate research in a multi-disciplinary environment. The symposium provides the student researchers with the professional development and training in public speaking, research presentations and networking. This unique forum helps solidify Bearkats as emerging professionals in their respective fields.

Spring 2025 Commencement Speakers Announced

Sam Houston State University’s Spring 2025 Commencement ceremonies will take place from Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 10 at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. Degree candidates attending the ceremonies on Thursday will be addressed by Dr. Robert Cain and Andy Bennett.

Alumni Spotlight: Broderick Nixon

Taking the leap of faith to put yourself out into the world can be nerve-wracking. However, Sam Houston State University alumnus Broderick Nixon decided to take the challenges of life by the horns.
